The origins on the birth of Castrignano del Capo are uncertain. The territory was certainly a Roman settlement even if the human presence is attested since the Bronze Age thanks to the presence of menhirs of Ussano situated in the territory of Giuliano di Lecce. It seems that even St. Peter himself, in his journey to Rome, stopped to Castrignano del Capo (at Santa Maria di Leuca to be precise) and that, since then, on the japigeo promontory, the pagan temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva has become the sanctuary of the "Madonna de finibus terrae" consacrated to a minor basilica in 1990.
Real urban centers began to take shape only around the Xth century, when the Saracens destroyed the nearby Casale Vereto causing the flee of its inhabitants who, in turn, gave rise to new agglomerations such as that of Castrignano del Capo.
Fief of the d'Almeto family in 1280, the town passed over the centuries to many feudal families. It was a fief of the De Caniano, of the Pignatelli, of Bilitta, the Ayerbo, Della Ratta, Della Barliera, the De Frisis and Guarini.
The coat of arms of Castrignano del Capo depicts a castle flanked by two towers.
The name, in fact, derives from the Latin Castrum, which means fortress. It is a fort that the Romans used to build defense of strategic locations.
