Castro is one of the most beautiful marinas in the Salento region.
It is situated in the most south-eastern part of the Italian peninsula, the so-called "boot's heel", and more specifically it is located in the most southern part of the Apulia region between the Brindisi coastline, the Gulf of Taranto and the extreme southern tip (Leuca) also known as "finibus terrae" (land's end ). A fishing and resort village, it boasts ancient origins as heir of the Roman Castrum Minervae. It was one of the first cities in the Salento region to be elevated to the rank of county and was also an Episcopalian until 1818.
The oldest building of the Aragonese castle dates back, in all probability, to the XII-XIIIth century and was built on the ruins of the Byzantine fortress. In the second half of the XIIIth century, Carlo I d’Angiò defines it as fortress of strategic importance for the defense of the kingdom.
The castle, listed together with the fortresses of Ostuni, Taranto, Ugento and Torremaggiore, is considered to be of national importance and considered one of the most functional, combining together natural defenses and military architecture. In 1480, after the sacking of Otranto, the city was invaded by the Turks and the castle was partially destroyed.
