Minervino di Lecce is situated in a lush valley dell'Idro, rich in water and vast areas of olive trees belonging to the Municipality and the villages of Specchia Gallone and Cocumola.
There are various theories about the origin of the name Minervino.
- Minervino apparently was founded by Japigi in the place where they had erected a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva and then destroyed, also visible in the current coat of arms of the country.
- the presence of the dolmen, which had the function to accept human sacrifices to the gods and animals, confirms the fact that these people, at one time, was pagan and then guess this should not be an invention.
- Minervino was founded in the ninth century, in memory of the old Castro, once called "Minervium", destroyed by the Saracens in one of their raids on our shores Salento around the year 1266, the city, then, would be built inland, where the population escaped sought refuge.
It seems that the most likely hypothesis would be that Minervino is of Roman origin, and this idea is supported by the finding of a road whose pavement is very similar to that of the Via Appia, which stretched from Rome to Brindisi, is the expression the permanence of a core Romano in the country.
