For some historians the name Spongano comes from Spongia, ie sponge, for the absorption capacity of the soil. Other scholars argue that the name derives from Spolium that remains, leftovers, referring to the remains of the Vaste populations or Castro.
In 1103 Spongano was under Tancredi di Altavilla, lord of the county of Castro, subsequently absorbed by Ruggero II, Count of Sicily. In 1270, the county of Castro, came under the principality of Taranto. In 1398 it was bought by the Orsini Del Balzo, who before with Raimondello, then with his wife Maria d'Enghien and his son Giovanni Antonio, he kept possession until 1463 when, with the death of the Prince, the house of Spongano, passed to the Royal Property. Subsequently, it was granted to Angilberto Del Balzo, son of Giovanni Antonio Orsini Del Balzo, after the killing of these, because he participated in the conspiracy of the Barons against the King of Naples, Ferdinando, in 1516 Spongano, returned to the county owned.
In 1534, Carlo V granted the County of Castro and feuds employees, including Spongano, family Gattinara. It then passed to Ruiz de Castro and finally to Lopez di Zunica, who ruled until 1777.
Spongano belonged to the County of Castro until 1806. Finally, the history of Spongano is intertwined with that of the Barons Bacile di Castiglione, the last feudal lords.
