The specchia has undergone a significant removal of material, considering what must have been its original size, but some ruins have been kept, among the three present in the territory of Salve, this one is the most significant.
(The "Specchie" are buildings like towers found mainly in the areas of Salento. They consist of artefacts of ancient origins made by dry piles of limestone. It is not possible to give a precise historical context; according to some they date back to the Neolithic while, others date them back to the times of messapi. The term derives from the Latin word "speculum" and refers to a lookout point).
According to some paleontologists the Specchie represent the ruins of ancient and gigantic houses, similar to the Sardinian Nuraghe and the famous ruins of trulli, others maintain they are buildings erected for defensive purposes by primitive man, while for others they are gravestones.
But the most real hypothesis, both for its structure and location, is that of a lookout post to control the coast.
